Colour Theory

I'm lousy at picking colour schemes. I tend to go for high contrast and nice round hex values. Generally the result is on the garish side - or so I'm told.

Now it turns out that there is an established theory that lets us pick out colours that "go" with one another. Colour Theory, in fact. It's all to do with the relative position of colours when you plot them on a colourwheel. I can't see why that should be so, myself, but apparently it works. So in the interests of inducing fewer headaches among my players, I thought I'd look into the matter.

As it turns out, there are some useful web-apps out there for determining this sort of thing. For example...

So I think I might put some values into that page and see if I can come up with something that remains tasteful, but without degenerating into the soft pastels of a recent Illusion game. That's the trouble really; I want to keep the scene dramatic, but not so much so that it pains the eyes.

More on this in a bit.
